Sun Print Art for Kids: How Light Creates an Image

Sun print art is a simple way to show kids something they normally cannot see: the effects of ultraviolet light.

The basic idea is easy. Place an object on light-sensitive paper and expose the paper to UV light. The areas exposed to the light change color, while the areas covered by the object remain protected. When the object is removed, its shape is left behind as an image.

It looks like an art project, but there is quite a bit of science happening at the same time.

What Makes a Sun Print?

Sunlight contains several different types of energy, including ultraviolet, or UV light.

Light-sensitive paper reacts when UV light reaches its surface. If part of the paper is covered by a leaf, stencil, toy, or other object, that object blocks some or all of the UV light from reaching the paper.

The result is a simple form of contact printing.

Objects that block more light usually create stronger shapes. Transparent or translucent objects can produce different effects because some light is still able to pass through them.

That makes sun printing a good activity for experimenting rather than simply following instructions.

Try Different Objects

Natural objects are an easy place to start.

Leaves, flowers, grasses, feathers, and small branches can create interesting shapes and patterns. Kids can also experiment with household objects such as keys, building pieces, string, mesh, cut paper, or stencils.

The most interesting results often come from asking questions before making the print.

Will a thick leaf block more light than a thin one?

What happens if two objects overlap?

Can light pass through colored plastic?

Will the same object make a different image at a different time of day?

Is there UV in the shade?

Each print becomes a small experiment.

Sunlight Isn't the Only Way to Experiment

Sunlight is the most obvious source of UV light, but some light-sensitive papers can also react to UV flashlights.

Starlight UV Sun Paper, for example, can be used with either sunlight or a UV flashlight. This makes it possible to compare different light sources or experiment indoors as well as outside.

Using a flashlight also gives kids more control over where the light goes. They can expose one part of the paper longer than another or move the light around to see how the image changes.

Turn Art into a Science Activity

A sun print project can easily become a science lesson by changing one variable at a time.

Try making prints with the same object but different exposure times.

Compare morning sunlight with afternoon sunlight.

Test different materials to see which ones block UV light best.

Experiment with sunscreen by placing a small amount on a clear material and comparing the exposed area with an untreated section.

Kids can make predictions before each experiment and then compare those predictions with the finished image.

There Is No Perfect Print

One of the best parts of sun print art is that the result is not always predictable.

Shadows move. Objects shift. Light intensity changes. Different materials let different amounts of UV light through.

Those variations are part of the experiment.

Instead of trying to make every print perfect, kids can look at what happened and ask why.

That combination of creativity, observation, and experimentation is what makes light-sensitive art such an interesting activity for both art and science.

Sometimes the easiest way to understand light is simply to make an image with it.
